September Book Selection Change [Aug. 29th, 2010|09:44 am]

The September book we picked back in December is "Salt Fish Girl" by Larissa Lai. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find: it's out of print, Chicago Public Library has no copies (the closest library with copies is UIUC downstate), and copies online are not cheap.

In the interest of discussing a book that perhaps some of us will be able to find an executive decision was made by those of us at last month's discussion - we switched the book to Lai's other novel which is in print (although CPL doesn't have copies of this one either), "When Fox is a Thousand."

I found a copy at Myopic that night...if you want to borrow it, let me know!

Yes you heard right! We are indeed having a third Think Galacticon in 2011! Thank you everyone for your support and interest!

We are currently discussing dates for Think Galacticon 2011. Please help Think Galacticon by notifying us of any uber special important events in 2011 that we shouldn't conflict with.

1. Check our Dreamwidth page for all the conflicts we have already thought of.
2. If you have a conflict we haven't discovered yet, or have any other comment about dates, please email info@thinkgalactic.org before April 15th.

Tip for LJ folks wanting to comment on Dreamwidth: DW's guide to commenting with an OpenID account. (Thanks j00j!)

Thank you! … and stay tuned for more!

Help save Think Galacticon 2011 [Feb. 17th, 2010|06:17 pm]

Hi everyone!.

We just had our deadline come and go and we are still short of the number of people we need for the 2011 Think Galacticon. If you want it to happen and haven't volunteered yet, or know someone who'd be a good concom member, please join! Our (actually) final deadline is Feb. 28th. If we don't fill our core positions by that date we won't be throwing a 3rd fabulous leftist SF/F weekend in Chicago.

The following are the positions that we MUST fill for the show to go on:

Events Coordinator- Local- Core
Consuite Coordinator- Local- Core
Programming Coordinator- Any- Core

For more information go here. There are more positions than those above, but not filling the ones above will stop us from having a Think Galacticon in 2011.

If you’re interested, e-mail concom2011@thinkgalactic.org with the position you are interested in and if you're local to Chicago are not.

Remedial Think Galactic! [Feb. 15th, 2010|01:17 am]

Well, it finally happened. Due to illness, conflicting convention schedules, sudden job requirements, and transportation impossibilities, we were woefully under-represented this month. Worse, the book was (how shall I put this) woefully under-read.

So we (both of us) thought that we should try for a make-up meeting.

For those of you who want to try again, the thought was to try for the new Filter coffeehouse (other suggestions are welcome). With two weeks left in February, that leaves room for a poll.

Poll #1525651 Oryx And Crake Remedial Meeting

The days I can make it to a remedial meeting for Oryx and Crake are

Thursday, February 18th
0(0.0%)
Friday, February 19th
0(0.0%)
Saturday, February 20th
0(0.0%)
Sunday, February 21st
0(0.0%)
Monday, February 22nd
0(0.0%)
Tuesday, February 23rd

Wednesday, February 24th

Thursday, February 25th
0(0.0%)
Friday, February 26th
0(0.0%)
Saturday, February 27th
0(0.0%)
Sunday, February 28th

I'm assuming 7:30pm for the weekdays, afternoon for the weekends, but feel free to come up with an alternate time suggestion.

January's Book: Daughters of the North [Feb. 6th, 2010|03:01 pm]

Daughters of the North, by Sarah Hall is set in a near future where economic and environmental collapse have made food and scarce and mandatory birth control. Finally fed up, the protagonist leaves her husband and assigned living space, and ventures out to Carhullan, an unsanctioned community in northern England.

There were a lot of split opinions on this book. Some members didn't find the protagonist a useful guide, since they felt she had no depth of personality. This in turn led to the question of whether she broken or tested: when she's brought to Carhullan, she is put in an isolation box for days, in order to see if she is a spy.
Some spoilers hereCollapse )
This was one of our better-attended meetings, and the back-and-forth discussion was pretty good. Please add or correct anything here if you think I missed something important.

This coming Thursday our book is Oryx and Crake, by Margaret Atwood. See you there.

We want Think Galacticon to keep happening, we really do. But the organizers of the first two cons have realized we can’t do it again without help. So if you love mixing science fiction/fantasy and leftist politics, we need you!

There are lots of different roles that need to be filled, and you don’t have to be in Chicago to take one on. Check out the list of positions we’re looking to fill below. If you’re interested, e-mail concom2011@thinkgalactic.org.

Please let us know by February 15th if you’re interested in participating. Please email the link for this page to anyone you think might be interested as well! To find out more about Think Galactic and our past conventions, check out our website.

These are the positions we really need filled (although we have many more down below!)!

website improvements [Jan. 9th, 2010|09:38 pm]

Hello! We invite you to have a look at ThinkGalactic.org, as we've made some changes. We’re migrating over to WordPress, which will hopefully improve our site’s usability for book group members, anyone interested in our group, and for the group members who maintain it. Please note that some of our older content has not yet been moved over– some of the older convention details aren’t here yet (direct links to those pages will still work; please comment here, on the WordPress blog, or e-mail info@thinkgalactic.org if you need any of that information), and we’re still working on some other formatting and organizational details. Thanks for being patient as we settle in, and we always welcome suggestions on accessibility, usability, and other website matters.

You can purchase their books as a group, or individually. If you're looking for ideas, I think the books that have made the Think Galactic! list would be a splendid beginning.

(2010) Carmen Dog

(Sale found via Jessa Crispin through bookslut).
